This market leading Personal Video Recorder (PVR) has leapfrogged the competition. Building on the success of previous models the 5810 has Twin Tuners, HDMI Upscaling and a massive 500GB HDD as well as being compatible with the latest Freeview Playback/Freeview+ standard.
To make sure you never miss your favourite program again the 5810 has Series Link and Accurate Recording features. Why watch them in Standard Definition when the Topfield upscales the picture to full 1080 resolution? The massive 500GB HDD allows you record up to 250 hours of TV.
Handsomely remodelled the TF5810 has a scrolling Vacuum Fluorescent Display that shows the channel or menu information. The front panel has the buttons needed for basic operation, including “Power, Menu and OK” as well as a jog wheel for Channel changing and Volume control. There is also a flap for access to the twin CAM slots making the 5810 suitable for Pay TV offerings from Setanta (CAM and active subscription required)
The 5810 also has a variety of connections to make it compatible with almost any home AV setup including twin SCART, HDMI, Composite and S-Video output, SPDIF for connection to an Amplifier, and a USB for file transfer to PC.

I bought the TF5810 on the strenght of some good reviews but it is not without its problems.
The cooling fan is noisy, as soon as it is out of warranty I shall open up the case to see if I can fit a better one.
There is more pixellation of the picture than I expected. The picture direct to TV is considerably better than recorded. This is with a very strong aerial signal. It may possibly be too strong and I shall try running an attenuator just in case it helps.
The sound is pretty good. (better than the TF5800)
THe remote is not as good as that supplied with the TF5800 and is a bit fussy about being pointed in exactly the right direction.
But the biggest niggle by far is the way that it stops playback when it starts or stops a recording. I get very fed up of having to repeatedly go back to the menu and re-start whatever I was watching.
It also has a habit of cutting off the very last bit of a programme. Very annoying to watch a program only to miss the conclusion.
If you set it to record a series (particularly on Channel 5) it can sometimes go mad and record the re-runs as well as the actual program. I only want to record the Gadget Show once a week not two or three times.
Would I buy another one? I doubt it. I would certainly look very closely at the Humax first. It is much quieter and has a very useful search function.

I bought the TF5810PVRt when it saw first launched as a replacement for my old TiVo.
The interface is not a patch on the TiVo but is better than most other PVRs that I have tried. The picture quality over HDMI is simply superb - as good as any Freeview picture that I have seen. The sound quality is also pretty good. The 500GB hard disk is more than enough for anyone but the most avid collector of TV series.
The best part of the Toppy is the ability to add features using TAPs and the ability to copy recorded programmes to your computer/laptop for viewing later or whilst traveling.
In terms of reliability, mine has had a complete hard drive failure after about 14 months but otherwise no problems.
Would I but another one - yes, at least until they release the third generation TiVo in the UK (pretty unlikely).
